Teaching important point:

To inform students of the necessary approaches in doing gap-filling exercices

Teaching difficult point:

To facilitate students’ understanding of the key information in a paragraph

Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Lead-in activities

Activity one : the teacher presents pictures about drought, earthquake, flood and many other natural disasters to give students a vivid image of various forms of natural disasters

Activity Two: the teacher demonstrates photos taken in the earthquake-stricken area Wenchuan, Sichuan Province to heighten the students’ awareness of the dreadful calamities of natural disasters.

Step 2 Pre-reading

The teacher encourages students to guess the meaning of “turn on” in the title with the help of illustrations and introductory words.

Step 3 Reading

Task 1: the teacher asks students to complete the gap-filling exercise after instruct students the reading strategies

Strategies: 1 Read the text for the general idea.

2 Read the paragraph with a sentence gap for the topic.

3 Read the sentences before and after the gap for clues.

4 Pay special attention to certain words, such as time references (then), pronoun references (it, that) and link words(however, but)

5 Fill in the gap and check whether it fits.

Task 2: the teacher invites students to answer several reading comprehension questions to get students familiar with key information in the text

Step4: Post-reading

the teacher encourages students to express their opinion on how we students use our strength to help disaster-stricken area.

Step 5: Homework

The teacher assigns a writing task of “how can we students protect the environment?”
