Step 1 Lead-in3 minutes

Ss are to guess the topic for the lesson.

Step 2 Reading16 minutes

Read for the main idea

Read to predict

Ss predict what they are going to read in the article.

Read to check

Ss read the first sentence in each paragraph and check their predictions.

Read for details

Read to illustrate

Ss read the first paragraph and draw a mind-map of the spending circle.

Read to find

1) Ss read the second paragraph for the results of the spending circle.

2) Ss read the last two paragraphs and use the sentence patterns given to retell the suggestions.

Read to think

Ss reflect what they have learned and discuss whether we should continue to spend or not. Use the given patterns to voice their opinions.

Step 3 Activity: Discuss how to spend money in this consumer society20 minutes

Ss are introduced the topic of the discussion via a video clip.

Ss work in groups of 5 and four groups discuss the topic from 4 different perspectives (student, expert, worker, boss). The rest group will be the observers.

Ss give presentations.

Ss review what they have discussed and develop a better understanding of the relationship between being/doing and having.

Step 4 Homework1 minute
