Step = 3 ﹨ ROMAN III : Careful-reading

1. look at the two pictures on the screen.

Picture 1: The houses were built facing each other around courtyards. So they form a rectangular courtyard

Picture 2: Little alleys that connect the rectangular courtyards of the traditional houses.They can also be called hutongs.

2. Do the following exercises and draw a picture on a piece of paper:

(1). Underline the time marker (words indicating time) in the text.

(2). What did the government do to these hutongs?

(3). Describe the functions of hutongs in different times.

3. Now go through the text again and answer the following questions in your own words.

(1). How did the emperors arrange houses for people with different social status?

The Emperor’s home, the Forbidden city, was in the city of Beijing .

The homes of nobles and wealthy citizens were in the hutongs closest to the royal palace.

Ordinary citizens lived in the hutongs further away from the palace.

(Their houses were arranged just like this.)

(2). Why did the emperors arrange the houses in this style to keep an eye on the people?

Because they want to ensure their safety and defend his supreme power.

(3). Can you describe people’s life in the hutongs?

They live a harmonious life there. They help each other and share the sadness and joy of everyday life. What’s more, their children play happily in the courtyards.

(4). Can you give examples of some famous hutongs in Beijing?

Sanmiao street— the oldest hutong (about 900 years)

Rongxian hutong— the longest hutong at 2km.

Qianshi hutong — the narrowest at only 40cm wide.

(Look at the names of these hutongs. Their names may convey different messages. Maybe the name Sanmiao hutong is related to temples.The name Qianshi hutong is related to money.After class, please find out at least three name stories of hutongs. )
