The students have been in Senior Three for several months and practiced a few guided practical writings, including a diary, a notice, a note, an e-mail and letters, so they want to be given a higher-level challenge or a more interesting task to meet. Also, my teaching emphasis is usually laid on how to help students move on further from their present foundation. I prefer teaching how to write based on Scaffolding(支架理论) by Vygotsky, a Russian psychologist. Therefore, I assign them pre-class tasks to do on the learning sheet and check their work as pre-writing activities, give them some needed instructions and set a writing assignment and arrange individual, pair or group activities as while-writing activities, and make necessary assessments as post-writing activities in the hope that they’ll get a better command of how to write a request letter in English after this period.
Objectives of this period
At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to get more familiar with the features of a(n) formal/informal request letter in English, learn to make assessments about a request letter consciously, and grasp how to write a request letter based on the requirements and instructions within a limited time.
