Teaching procedures:

Step1: Lead-in

Begin with an idiom in Unit 1 about festival to lead to the main theme of today’s lecture.

“As we sow, so shall we reap.”

“We are what we eat.” (try to interpret the meaning)

“Our eating habits have changed, as has our way of life.” (set students thinking)

Step2: Presentation

Glance through the whole unit (not into every detail), focus on the topic-related information and speak them out.

eg. “variety/category”, “terms like protein”, “functions”, “balanced”, “benefits”, “idioms”

Retell the story and fill in the blanks based on it.

Note: “get away with”, “regulars”, “surprisingly”, “a second plate”, “tie the knot”

Finally come to the conclusion: A balanced diet really counts.

Get them to know the food pyramid and see whether they are eating healthily.

Step3: Discussing

Group work: your preference and sound tips

List some idioms on healthy eating.

Brainstorm other idioms concerning everyday food like “apple”, “milk”, “bean”, “egg”, etc

Step4: Follow-up task

Read the first part in the supplementary material and try to figure out the possible meaning of each underlined idiom. Consult the dictionary if necessary.
