3. Personal objectives
After the class, the students could achieve the above aims.
Analysis of the students:
About 43 senior high school students come from Class7, Grade1. The students are fond of learning English but they are not very good at speaking and writing.
Focal and difficult points:
1.Improve the students’ reading skills by constant practice.
2.Know background information about some important festivals.
3.Introduce their favorite festivals to other people.
Teaching procedures and time allotment:
Stage1. Greetings
Stage2. Warming up (5 mins)
Ask the students to look at the picture and try to guess what they are doing. It is obvious that they are getting together and enjoying a big meal. Then ask the students to think about when they always get together with their own family members to have a meal. Such as Spring Festival. Ask them to name more Chinese traditional festivals.
Then play the video about Western traditional festivals. Ask the students to take out a piece of paper and watch the video carefully to write down the festivals introduced on the paper. Check the Western festivals together. Ask the students whether they want to learn more about the festivals around the world and begin the reading.
Stage3. Pre-reading (4mins)
Ask the students to turn to page 1 and read the title carefully. Then ask them to turn to next page and read the subtitles to fill in the blanks. Ask them to predict the main idea of the reading passage with the help of the pictures given in the passage.
Stage 4. While-reading (27mins)
Step1. Listening
Play the tape. Ask students to listen carefully to fill in the chart. During the listening, the students are required to circle names of festivals and countries mentioned in the text. Check the answers with the class by inviting some students to fill in the chart.
Step2. Scanning
Give the students 5 minutes to go through the passage and judge whether the following five statements are true or false. Then ask five students to check the answers and share their reasons.
