Learning situation analysis:
The attributive clause is a difficult grammar item for the students. In order to arouse the students’ interest in learning, this lecture is designed based on the heated topic of the year 2016-the Rio Olympics ,especially some information of the Chinese women volleyball team.
Teaching procedures:
Step I. Lead-in
To watch a video about “the Chinese volleyball team winning the 1st place in the Rio Olympics” to activate some background knowledge and arouse the students’ interest.(Interest is the best teacher)
Step II. Presentation
To demonstrate the forming process of the attributive clause by using the animated pictures.
Task 1: To join the two sentences into one with that/which:
The Olympic Games are an international sports competition.
The sports competition is held every four years in a different city.
-----The Olympic Games are an international sports competition that/which is held every four years in a different city.(that/which is used as Subject in the clause)
(the general information of the Olympics):
The Olympic Games were originated in ancient Greece.

Athletes from different nations compete against each other in the competition.

To study the structure of prep + which/whom, how to decide the preposition, how to use whose and how to differentiate when/where/why and that/which by taking the Olympic Games as examples. (The examples of that/which are related to the general information of the Olympics. The examples of prep + which/whom and the examples of the other structures are related to the information of the Chinese women volleyball team.
