The reading passage entitled “A Visit to the Moon” is from Module 3 Unit4 Astronomy: the science of stars. It mainly introduces students the author’s trip to the moon; including what happened to them when the gravity changed and how they felt during the exhausting but exciting trip. This is a science article with a clear structure. Moreover, it has some excellent writing tips, which can help students write a narrative.
Analysis of students
As Senior One students in high school, most of them are interested in the topic of astronomy and science. They have accumulated a certain number of vocabularies and mastered some simple learning strategies for reading and writing. However, most of them may still have difficulty in writing a passage in a vivid way, using specific action and feelings. In this class, based on the reading passage, I intend to help students discover and practice the skills of using specific action and feelings to make writing vivid.
Learning Objectives:
To understand the new words and phrases, such as cheer up, gravity, float…, etc.
To find out what happened to the author, how the gravity changed, how he felt during the trip.
To make a passage vivid by using verbs that show specific action and specific feelings directly and indirectly.
