2. Students will be able to use the following words and expressions to express their opinions about chemical and organic farming: fertilizer, fertile, nutrition, bacteria, pest, soil, reduce, build up, focus on, free from;

3. Students will be able to write a summary by finding the topic sentence of each paragraph and rewriting them in their own words.

Key and difficult points:

1. Students may find it difficult to use their own words to rewrite the topic sentences.

2. Students may find it difficult to join the sentences into a paragraph effectively.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1: Lead-in and pre-reading

1. Look at a picture and ask the students some questions which are related to the topic of the passage.

Qs: Where are they? What are they doing? Have you ever gone shopping for vegetables or fruits?

How do you deal with them before eating? And why do you have to do so?

Do you think the water can wash off the chemicals? What kind of food would you like to eat?

T: Today we’ll go through a passage and let’s see what the writer chooses.

(设计目的:从一张图片引出相关问题,贴近学生生活,让他们有话可说,并从这些问题引出本文的话题,并让学生带着疑问去寻找答案——作者会作何选择?)

Step 2: Reading

1. Find and underline the topic sentence of each paragraph.

(设计说明:主题句是引领及概括本段的句子,查找主题句可以让学生了解文章的基本结构,熟悉每段文字的主要内容。)

Paragraph 1:

Q1: Is this paragraph about chemical or organic farming?

(设计目的:以标题作为主线,贯穿整个阅读过程,每段重复这一问题,并结合其他问题,学生可逐渐明确:化学耕作存在诸多问题,有机耕作有益健康。在阅读完全文之后也能客观地回应标题,做出自己的选择。)

Topic sentence:

Recently, however, scientists have been finding that long-term use of these fertilizers can cause damage to the land and, even more dangerous, to people’s health.

Q2: Why do you think this sentence is the topic sentence? Any word can show the writer’s concern? ( however)

Tip 1: Pay attention to the adverbs, which make connection between parts clear and reasonable.

(设计说明:让学生通过查找相关副词,了解文章的上下逻辑关系以及作者的关注点,以便更好地理解文章。)
