The teaching material is from Book 4 Unit 2 Using language. It is an exposition which mainly introduces students to the advantages of organic farming. This passage containing about 400 words is made up of 4 paragraphs with a topic sentence in each paragraph. Therefore, it’s suitable for students to practise summary writing.
Students’ Analysis
Students are from Grade one in Hongda Senior High school and generally achieved an English level of 7. From the media, they have learned some information about organic farming and are concerned about the quality of the food they eat. Besides, they’ve already learned some strategies about summary writing.
Teaching objectives
Students will find the key information to better understand the differences between chemical farming and organic farming by reading paragraph by paragraph.
Students will work out the structure of the exposition and write a summary of the passage by practising.
Students will know the criteria for a good summary from the teacher.
Students will make a comparison between chemical farming and organic farming and realize the advantages of organic farming by thinking critically.

This lesson lays emphasis on understanding of the passage and ways to write a summary.
The anticipated difficulties are how to help students find out the key information and summarize the passage based on the key information

Step1 Lead-in (2 min)
Today is Grain Rain (Guyu), one of the 24 solar terms in China, which means rainfall will increase and crops will grow.
What do you think is necessary to make crops grow? (soil, water, air, sun,..)
What’s the substance farmers put on soil to make crops grow strong and healthy? (fertilizer)
How many kinds of fertilizers do you know? (chemical fertilizer and natural fertilizer)
Depending on the fertilizers used, farming can be divided into chemical farming and organic farming. Which one do you think is better?
Aim: To arouse students’ interest and introduce students to the topic of the passage.
Step2 Reading (15 min)
I. Read paragraph 1 and answer:
