Analyses of teaching material:
The reading material is a passage named Copernicus’ Revolutionary Theory, taken from Module 5, NSEFC. The passage mainly talks about the process Copernicus developed his theory that the sun rather than the earth is the center of the solar system. The passage is about science exploration so it will be appealing to the students who have interest in science or astronomy. However, new words and expressions like revolutionary, enthusiastic and make sense may be a little difficult for students to learn. Therefore, T must make the words clearer to Ss through the learning of the passage.
Teaching objectives:
Language knowledge
In this class, students are required to read and learn the meaning of new words and expressions such as revolutionary, enthusiastic and make sense and use them in proper situations. Besides, students will get to know the function and basic structure of a persuasive letter.
Language skills
Ss will be able to:
skim to get and analyze the structure of the whole passage
scan to get more detailed information
discuss to exchange valuable ideas
write a persuasive letter to persuade someone to do certain things.
Cultural awareness:
After the class, student will have a better understanding of scientific research and have the awareness that new discoveries may face challenges and the development of science is based on the contributions of selfless scientists.
Affect:
Ss will know the importance of scientific research and thus learn to appreciate scientists’ great contribution to society, which will encourage their further study or research.
