设计本单元的中心话题是艺术，本节课是本单元的第一节阅读课，是一篇以介绍从中世纪到十九世纪晚期西方绘画艺术历史为主的说明文。文章以时间为主线分成四个时间段，分别对四种流派的名称，产生原因，绘画特点，技术发展，以及影响进行说明，并配有图片直观的展示了同期的代表作。文章的结构特点是独立的内容块，以时间为主线，平行并进。
