Students are capable of reading the details closely to illustrate the characteristics of each art styles in chronological order.
Students can understand artistic styles are influenced by the customs and faith.
Students are able to appreciate and distinguish paintings from their characteristics and background.
Teaching procedures
Step 1. Lead-in (5 minutes)
Painting appreciating & talking (5 minutes)
Ask students to choose one favorite painting from four of different styles and tell the reasons.
Aim: Students will know that painting is of different styles and is related to people’s idea and faith.
Step 2. Reading ( 30minutes)
Activity 1. First reading (5 minutes)
Read for topic sentence and structure
Q1: Read the passage quickly and find out the topic sentence of the text.
Topic sentence: Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones, starting from the sixth century AD.
→This text will describe the styles of western art.
Q2: How many styles of Western painting are mentioned in the text? What are they?
Four styles: the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, Impressionism and Modern Art.
Activity 2. Second reading (15 minutes)
Read for characteristics of each art styles in chronological order
Style 1,2: The Middle Ages & Renaissance
