Teaching Procedures:
Step 1: Pre-writing
Ask students to review The Best of Manhattan’s Art Galleries and what matters for these galleries
Let students discuss the questions in Exercise 1 in groups of 4, expressing their suggestions and reasons about the artworks in a newly-opened gallery.
Step 2: Writing
1. Ask students to write a letter to the art gallery committee giving suggestions and reasons for the newly-opened gallery.
Tips: 1. Use some useful sentences and typical structures such as I wish to make a suggestion about…, If you were to ..., I believe ..., in Page 8.
2. Organize the suggestions and reasons produced in the discussion.
3. Polish it after writing by yourself.
4. Exchange it with partner and correct the mistakes.
2. Let students show some of their writings and make assessments.
3. A sample letter:
Dear Committee members,
I wish to make a suggestion about the kind of art we can put into our new gallery. Our district is well-known for paper-cutting and the people are very skilled at it. At the moment, these people don’t have anywhere to display the variety and skill of their craftsmanship. If the skill is lost there may be no record of it. The gallery would provide them with an opportunity to preserve this skill. If you were to allow them to display their expertise here I believe we could make our district famous and encourage more tourists to come here.
I hope you will consider my suggestion.

1. Ask students to read a letter in Page 45 and make notes about its content on the outline provided.

Write a letter to the headmaster asking for permission to make your suggested change so that the school will become more attractive.
