IV. Teaching procedure

Step 1. Warming-up and leading-in

1.Tell the students that we are going to have a party and what they need to do is just enjoy the party. This is to relax the students and make them emotionally prepared for the following two songs.

2.Present the song: “Rolling in the deep” by Adele, and analyze the lyric “We could have had it all”, and point out the structure of Subjunctive mood in main clauses.

3. Present the song: “If I were a boy” by Beyonce, and analyze the lyric “If I were a boy...”, and point out the structure of Subjunctive mood in adverbial clauses.

Step 2. Rule induction and explanation

1.Read and analyze the mood and tense in the following sentences:

1)If I saw him now, I would be very happy.

2)If I were to see him tomorrow, I would be very happy.

3)If I had seen him then, I would have been very happy.

2.Draw the rules of Subjunctive mood from the sentences above.
