5. Through giving advice to disabled people, students can use the expressions they have learnt to encourage others
Analysis of students:
They are students from Grade 1 and they are not so exposed to the world of disabled people. But proper demonstrations of disabled people in the form of videos and pictures will easily draw their interest. They are still not excellent in expressing their thoughts completely so some sentence structures will be used to help them organize what they want to say. Besides, they like discussing with each other when faced with difficult tasks.
Teaching focuses and difficulties:
Students can learn more details about the passage by finding figures, verbs and adjectives
Students can use what they have just learnt to give advice to disabled people
Teaching procedure:
Step 1: Lead-in
A video about Peng Chao, a disabled man, is played before class.
Step 2: Warming up
Activity 1: Students fill in the blanks about the information of Peng Chao.

Activity 2: Students are asked to tell some disabled people that they know. After that, the teacher shows students some pictures of disabled people.
Activity 3: Students learn something about the “Family Village”.
T: They are all successful and win people’s praise. But there are many disabled people suffering a lot because of their disabilities. Luckily, there is a website called “Family Village”. What can it do?
Ss: It gives ordinary young people with a disability a chance to tell their personal stories.
T: Now it has changed its name to Waisman Center. We can find a lot of stories here. And Marty is one of the stories.
Step 3: Skimming
Students are asked to read the story quickly and answer the 3 questions.
(1) What’s his disease? -------He has a muscle disease which makes him very weak.
(2) When was he disabled? -------When he was ten years old.
(3) At the beginning, what did Marty do to deal with his disease? -------He went to the hospital.
Step 4: Scanning
Activity 1: Finding the figures in paragraph 2
