Pre-reading is designed to further stimulate their interest in the topic of this unit. Meanwhile, students can have the background of the text.
Reading passage Old Tom the Killer Whale consist of two anecdotes witnessed by Clancy. The teacher can first get students to scan the text and get the main idea of each story. Then let them scan for further understanding the passage, this step can be based on two tasks——answering some questions and put the events in correct order. In order to let the students pay attention to the writer’s vivid description, the teacher can ask them to do a blank—filling exercise to find the key verbs which are used to describe the action of killer whale and reaction of whalers. Having done this ,the students must have a clear understanding of the process of hunting and saving.
To consolidate the contents of the reading passage, the students are encouraged to retell the text with the key verbs on the blackboard. At the end of the class the students will have a discussion in groups about whether they are for or against whale hunting and reasons.
