Unit 4 Sharing Using Language
Teaching ideology
It is advocated that teaching today should focus on cultivating students’ “key competences”, which include language skills, cultural characters, thinking qualities and learning abilities. That is to say, in English teaching we should pay more attention to students’ comprehensive language competence as well as their process of thinking and learning.
As for writing, it is a comprehensive process where the students must generalize what they have learned during their daily study. In other words, writing is a more complicated procedure for students’ output than other activities during language learning. Therefore, writing is viewed as the result of complex processes of planning, drafting, reviewing and revising and writing also involves the strategies, procedures and decision-making employed by the young writers as they write. As a result, writing should focus more on its usage and meaning in contexts and on the other hand, teachers are supposed to act as a guide and a facilitator in this period, allowing students’ learning and using of the target language to go on smoothly.
Analysis of teaching material
The teaching material is the third part of Book 7 Unit 4 Sharing.
The previous parts are mainly about a letter of a voluntary teacher’s visit to a very poor village and her ideas about how people can help those people in the under-developed areas. This part of teaching materials is about a website where people can buy something and donate it to those who are in the poor areas around the world. Actually these parts are an organic whole to get the students to know about other people’s life and the ways we can help them.
In this part, students are required to firstly answer some easy questions after the introduction of the website. Secondly they are required to choose some proper gifts to those people in those situations described in Exercise 2. The aim of this task is to check whether the students understand the meaning and the intention of each gift.
Analysis of learners
The students are from Class 5 Grade 2 in a key Senior High School, whose language competences are mostly above average; that is to say, most of the students have mastered some basic writing skills and to some degree they can compose fluent articles in their daily writing. Most of the students are interested in English learning, but sometimes are less active to show themselves during classes.
