However, they still make different kinds of mistakes in writing compositions.
III. 教学重点难点
How to talk about and write places.
How to write better compositions without any mistakes.
IV. 教学过程
Step I Warming up: Students presentation.
Speaking task:
Ask students from the four groups to talk about their favorite place in China so the students can have a better understanding of this kind of composition.
Step II Discussion: Learning different ways to introduce a place
Help Ss learn the basic information of this kind of writing through Q&A:
It belongs to expository writing and we should write in first person and present tense.
Ask Ss how many parts there are in a composition and discuss the content and language features of each part:
Part 1 Introduction----specific
Part 2 Supporting detail----coherent
Part 3 Conclusion----brief
In the first part, we should have a brief introduction of the place, for example: we can say: I would like to introduce my hometown to you or I'm writing to give you a description of my hometown.
In the second part, ask Ss to discuss what can be written when introducing a place, then check the answer together: location, area, population, climate, history, transportation, places of interest and culture. Then have a review of the useful expressions together.
Translation tasks: ask Ss to translate some Chinese sentences into English, and discuss how to express the meanings in a more efficient way. For example, how to combine two sentences into one; how to use advanced words and phrases; how to use diverse sentence patterns such as attributive clause to express yourself and so on.
Ask Ss to put five sentences in the right order. Discuss the importance of linking words in the composition and the language features of this part.
Discuss ways to conclude the composition. For example, we can say: I'm sure you will like it, or I'm sure you will have a good time or (I'm)Looking forward to your coming. Then discuss the language feature of the ending part.
Step III Check the compositions:
After writing a draft, we ought to check it from many perspectives, such as spelling, linking words, enough information, sentence patterns, and logic.
