Skimming is a reading method that is reading one paragraph or a passage very quickly to get the main idea. Some times you can get the topic sentence from the first sentence and the last sentence.
T: Let’s take the second paragraph for example. Which one is the topic sentence?

Scanning is a different reading method. You read one paragraph and try to find the key words that can support the author’s view and help you understand him.
T: For example: The author said cloning is very complicated, can you spot the words to prove it?
