This lesson is the second period of this unit, and it’s a reading lesson. The purpose of this reading is mainly to introduce the problem of the snakes and presents the procedures of catching them and applying for a patent. Through the study of this lesson, the students are expected to learn more about invention and about the procedures of applying for a patent. Besides, they are encouraged to be more interested in inventing something in their daily life if possible.Such a topic is related to our daily life, so it is helpful to raise the students’ learning interests and it will be easier to get knowledge .
b. About the students
They are senior two students, and after about two years of study, they have a larger storage of vocabulary and they have got the basic ability of communication, but most of them come from the countryside with poor English, and many still lack vocabulary and confidence to express themselves or communicate with others in English. So, in this class, I will try my best to arouse their curiosity and enthusiasm to join in the class to practice their spoken English.
Ⅱ. Teaching aims
a. know more about inventions;
b. learn some useful words and important sentences;
c. learn and understand the procedures to apply for a patent;
Ⅲ. Teaching important points
a. Help the students learn more about invention and about applying for a patent;
b. Train their reading ability and their spoken English.
Ⅳ. Teaching difficult points
a. How to train their skimming and scanning abilities to get specific information from the text.
b. How to encourage them to open their mouth and express themselves in English bravely.

Top-down reading, task-based reading, autonomous learning and cooperative learning.

VII. Teaching procedures.
Step 1. Preview and check
Teacher asks the students to answer the meaning of the important words and expressions.

Step 2. Lead in and warming up(PPT同步展示)
a. Teacher asks the students to look at the pictures of warming up part on page 19, and try to tell which is an invention and which is a discovery.
b. Ask the students to discuss and work with each other to summarize the definition of a discovery and an invention.
