Using language
Unit 3 Inventors and inventions·Using language
Reading, Speaking and Writing
Ⅰ Teaching Aims:
1. Students can retell some useful new words and expressions.
2. Train students’ language skills by reading, speaking and writing.
3. Students can memorize some functional structures applying for a post and use them correctly in writing.
4. Encourage students to learn from Alexander Graham Bell’s innovative spirits by following his inventing process.
Ⅱ Analysis of the teaching material
This is the fifth period of this unit which focuses on using language. Therefore, the emphasis of this period should be laid on reading, speaking and writing activity. The teaching difficult point lies in how to get students fully involved in classroom activities, especially the speaking and writing part. The reading introduces Alexander Bell’s life process and his major inventions. The exercises train students’ reading skills step by step. Speaking is an opportunity for students to be more creative. This activity develops teamwork and co-operation. All of these lay the foundation for the next and final task—practical writing. In this way, students feel that they have enough information to put out.
Ⅲ Analysis of the students
Students from Yichang NO.1 Senior High School have good English proficiency. They have learned the first reading part before this period, partially understood the text content and relevant background knowledge. However, they may have difficulty understanding some idiomatic expressions and complicated sentences. It is also likely that they may feel reluctant to voice their opinions in speaking part. Therefore, I will encourage them when necessary and have enough patience with them.
