Analysis of the students

The students have got some common sense about discoveries and inventions, so it is not difficult for them to understand the conception of invention. However, they have little chance to cultivate their imagination and creativity. Besides, their ability to discover and solve the problem needs to be developed.

Teaching procedures

Step One: Revision

Introduce the topic in this unit by brainstorming discoveries and inventions

while organizing some mini-discussions according to the pictures.

Look at the pictures and have mini-discussions.

Discussion (1): what can you find from the picture?

(The two famous persons. They are… )

Discussion (2): what are the two men doing?

(Newton is hit?on the head by an apple while Jobs is holding his great brand logo Apple )

Discussion(3): which do you think is an invention? And your reasons.

(…)

Discussion(4):what about these pictures? Are they inventions?

(air-conditioners; an aeroplane; cellphones; a bottle of perfume; an amphibious car)

【Purpose】To get the students involved, lead them to the topic of this period, introduce the teaching focus and activate students’ knowledge about invention in a natural and communicative way.

Step Two: Pre-reading

【Purpose】To help students have a general idea of the learning focus and guide them to guess the advantages of each invention shown in each picture using their imagination .
