II. The analysis of teaching material

The teaching material is the reading part from NEW SENIOR ENGLISH FOR CHINA STUDENT’S BOOK 8, UNIT 4, Using language. The topic of this unit is Pygmalion. What this part presents us is the scene that Pickering made a bet with Henry. If Henry can pass Eliza off as a lady in three months, Pickering will consider Henry the greatest teacher alive and he also agrees to pay for the lessons.

III. The analysis of learning condition

The students are from grade 2 in senior high school. As high school students, they have achieved certain English level and they have the ability to use reading strategies to do the reading task . Since they are in grade2, they are easily activated and want to air their own opinions on the topic. They are unfamiliar with the topic of Pygmalion. But they may like to play a role in the play. Moreover, their vocabulary is limited so there is a word competition in the class

IV. Learning objectives

1. Language skills

At the beginning of the class, students may enjoy a video based on the title.

Students can scan the passage and find out the specific information such as when, where and who.

2. Language knowledge

Students can master the key words and phrases of nail, shabby, referee, compromise, horrible, laundry, bathtub, sob, waist, vest, disgusting, overlook, alphabet, show...in, once more, in need of and fade out.

3.Effects

Students will realize that the importance of accents and dialects and they will concern themselves with the issue of speaking good English.

4. Cultural awareness

Students will be proud of our homeland by knowing how powerful it is now and study hard to make it stronger.

5. Learning strategies

Students will cultivate their ability in individual learning and cooperative learning by doing some activities independently and some in groups.

Students will communicate with each other in English while doing the group work.

V. Language focuses and difficulties

1. Language focuses

This is a reading and acting period so the focus is to cultivate the students’ reading skills and practise acting. Many activities are designed to help students to train their reading skills, such as skimming, scanning and careful reading. It is also important for the students to master the words and phrases they learned yesterday.

Language difficulties

As the students have seldom seen dialects appeared in the reading passage so they may have some difficulties in understanding the passage. So the teacher will help them transform them into formal ones.
