Students in Senior 2 have a certain amount of English knowledge. However, they have bad reading habits. So in this class, I’m supposed to develop students’ reading skills, such as skimming, scanning, detailed reading and summarizing. Besides, Students are shy and lack confidence in class. Therefore, what I should do is to arouse students’ interest and encourage them to speak up confidently.
Teaching Objectives
Language ability: To make use of some words and expressions.
Learning ability: To use different reading skills such as skimming, scanning and detailed reading to find the relevant information.
Thinking quality: To enhance reading effect by self learning and cooperative learning.
Culture character: to know the thorough meaning of the saying “ No pains, No gains”. Meanwhile, put their effort into the practice of pursuing high goal and a further success in life.
Teaching Important & Difficult Points
1. How to use the expressions and how to consolidate the knowledge after reading.
2. How to help the Ss to read smoothly while reading period and dig out the indicated theme of the text.
Teaching & Learning Methods
TBLT (Task Based Language Teaching): Students will be given different tasks to develop their language fluency and confidence
Communicative Language Teaching: Language is used for communication. So there is a free talk for students to interact with each other.
Self-learning and Cooperative learning are also used.
The purpose is to make students the master of the class.
Teaching Procedures
Step 1. Lead-in and Pre-reading
1) Lead in the topic by showing some pictures taken in the Antarctica
Purpose: to arouse students’ curiosity, let them think actively and naturally lead in the passage.
Step 2. While-reading(skimming and scanning)
1: Skimming
Reading skill 1: Skimming is the best way to get the general idea. At the same time, I will remind my students not to read word by word.
1)Skim the title and the underlined sentences.
2)Skim for the main idea of each part
Purpose: Make students understand the passage roughly and develop students’ ability of getting the main idea.
