My teaching is intended to help the students fully understand the text, learn about all the hardships the expedition team suffered and appreciate the perseverance, fearlessness, optimism and teamwork spirit they have shown. More importantly, the students are supposed to think about the deep meaning behind the text , that is the value of being determined, optimistic, cooperative in one’s growth and further in one’s life. The teaching procedure is shown as follows:
Step 1 Let’s talk
Start the class with “The winter vacation is just around the corner” and ask the students the question: “Have you decided where to spend your winter holidays?” The students are allowed some time to share with each other their holiday plans.
Show the students the teacher’s holiday plan and introduce the potential dangers involved in the expedition.
Introduce the background knowledge of the text.
Step 2 Let’s read and think
1. Students read the whole text and then work individually to find as much information as possible about the ship Endurance and Sir Ernest Shackleton.
Endurance1. It was the name of the ship a crew of ___________ took on their ________________in August 1914. 2. It___________ pack ice as it ____________ Antarctica on January3. Finally it________. Sir Ernest Shackleton1.2.3.He accepted Perce and made him a steward despite his silly behavior. 4.5.He set out framework for their life on Elephant Island. 6.2. Check the information about Endurance and then students answer an additional question: Why was the ship named Endurance? Students speak out their opinions freely.
3. Deal with the information about Sir Ernest Shackleton and then discuss why he threw gold coins and his gold watch but encouraged Hussey to bring his banjo before the ship sank. After that, students summarize Shackleton’s qualities with proof.
4. Students make up a dialogue between Shackleton and Perce Blackborow based on the text and the given information.

Students volunteer to be the host/hostess, Sir Ernest Shackleton, Perce Blackborow who are invited to Jimmy Show to share their experiences with the audience.
