Analysis of the students:

1. This is a class consisting of 50 students with average academic performances, who aim to major in science in university when graduating from high school.

2. The students can have abilities of previewing, reviewing. They have previewed the new words and expressions before class.

3. Most students would like to participate in activities guided by the teacher, and they have a sense of cooperation in learning activities like group work.

Analysis of the passage:

The reading passage is written and set out to introduce the last part of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ill-fated expedition to Antarctica in 1914-1916: the story of his team’s amazing survival experience on the Elephant Island and Shackleton’s epic attempts to rescue them .

Teaching aims:

1. Knowledge aim:

Help the students to learn about the story of survival and how to write a review on such kind of story.

2. Ability aims:

1). To practice the students’ oral English on brief inference from story of the epic expedition.

2). To develop the students’ reading skills on analyzing relevant information and figuring out conclusions from the story of the epic expedition.

3). To practice the students’ writing skills on writing reviews.

3. Emotion aims:

To let the students realize that whenever a disaster strikes and all hope is gone, they should dream it possible.

To encourage the students to overcome difficulties bravely and be determined not to give up just like Shackleton’ team.
