Step 3

Pre-reading

Ask the Ss to predict the passage by asking the following two questions.

1. Will the two elder sisters look after their father well?

2. Did Kent leave Britain? What might happen to him?Predict the passage by answering the two questions.After reviewing Part 1 of the play, the Ss know that the two elder sisters got all the land from King Lear and that King Lear ordered Kent leave the Kingdom. So I let the Ss to predict whether the two elder sisters will look after their father well and what might happen to Kent. And then they are eager to learn the passage.

Step 4

While-reading 1. Ask the Ss to scan the passage and list the characters who appear in the passage.Scan the passage and find out the characters.Develop the Ss’ reading skills, that is, Scanning. Besides, when we appreciate a play, we have to know the character.2. Ask the Ss to skim the passage and answer the following two questions.

1) What happened to Kent?

2.)How do Goneril and her servant, Oswald, act towards King Lear?Skim the passage and find out the information that we need.Develop the Ss’ reading skills, that is, Skimming. Additionally, when we appreciate a play, we have to know the plot.3. Ask the Ss to read the passage again and summarize the passage by filling the blanks.Read the passage carefully and summarize the passage by filling in the blanks.Develop the Ss’ reading skills, that is, summary. And thus the Ss can get the main idea of the passage clearly.

Step 5

Post-reading 1. Ask the Ss to listen to the tape, meanwhile, they can read after the tape in a low voice. While listening, they should pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation.Listen to the tape and read after the tape in a low voice.Let the Ss try their best to imitate the pronunciation and intonation, and thus they can feel the emotion of each character. 2. Invite one group to perform the play.One group comes to the front to perform the play that they have prepared well in advance. Let the Ss to feel the emotion of each character much better by acting the play out in person. Meanwhile, it can get more students interested in the play. Discuss the following two questions.

1) What will Regan do when hearing that her father is being treated disrespectfully?

2) What lesson will the king learn in the end?

Reflection.

1) How will you behave towards your parents in future?Discuss the two questions in groups and reflect how we should treat our parents in future.Develop the Ss’ critical thinking and speaking. And let the Ss to think about what lesson we have learned from the play and how we should treat our parents in future.Step 6
