② The students will have a better understanding of the novel Dream of the Red Mansions and learn some new words and phrases concerning “a letter for recommendation”.

(2) Language skills:

① The students clearly know how to write “a letter of recommendation”.

② The students are able to combine two short sentences into one by using attributive clause, non-finite verb, appositive etc.

(3) Strategies and effects:

Foster students’ awareness of cooperative study.

The Key points of the class:

The key point of the class is to help students ①to know the elements that can be used to recommend a book, ②to polish their compositions by using attributive clause, non-finite verb, appositive etc. ③ to improve their cultural attainment of our classical novels.

The teaching method:

Task-based teaching, cooperative learning

Teaching procedure:

1. Lead in (12 min)

Sharing time: ask the students to share a book that they have read during the reading festival.

Before sharing: draw students’ attention to how to share a book, that is, by recommending some elements, such as plot, characters, writer, historical role, etc. (4 min)

Round One: Students share their books with their desk mates. (4 min)

Round Two: Ask 3-4 students to share their books in front of the class. (4 min)

2. Reading Task (10 min)

Ask students to go through the reading material (script of Dream of the Red Mansion)and mark down some useful points– writer, historical role, plot, brief introduction, characters etc that they may use to serve as the reasons to recommend the book.

3. Writing Task (20 min)

假定你是李华,你的笔友Chris中文学得很好,对中国历史文化很感兴趣。他来信让你推荐适合的中文读物。请根据下面的要求给他写一封回信。内容包括:

(1)推荐读物:《红楼梦》;

(2)推荐理由:四大名著之一;中国传统文化的百科全书 ……
