Teaching steps:
Step 1: Warming up
Greeting: Teacher is disguised as a tour guide from Auckland, New Zealand and welcomes all the Chinese exchange students.
Watch a short video about New Zealand, and get the general impression on the country.
Read a map of New Zealand to infer more information about it such as nearby seas, main islands, mountains, lowest and highest areas, major cities, possible climate, ...
Step 2: Reading Part 1 (Geography)
Scan the passage to understand the main idea and its writing style.
Read part 1 carefully, set down a few key words on the map while reading, then give a brief introduction with the help of the map and key words.
Think: On which island would you expect there to be more people? Give at least two reasons.
Step 3: Reading Part 2 (History)
Scan part 2 and locate 6 different periods of time in New Zealand history.
Read part 2 more carefully and figure out different settlers’ behaviours during different periods of time by completing a time line:
in about 1000 AD(Who? What?) → the next 200 years(Who? What?) → in about 1790(Who? What?) → in 1840(Who? What?) → between 1860-1872(Who? What?) → after the New Zealand land wars(Who? What?)
Think: Are the changes happened in New Zealand good or bad? What can you learn from those changes?
Step 4: Role Play
Give the passage a proper title and explain the reason you choose it:
