My teaching keys and difficulties are to make the students understand the whole passage, realize that festivals exist everywhere and that different festivals are celebrated in the different ways.
The students:
The students are interested in festivals and they have many things to talk about them. However, most of my students are not good at English and the reading text mentions some western cultures. So it will be a little difficult for them to understand the passage.
The teaching procedure
Step 1: Warming-up(3minutes)
I will show students some pictures in the ppt. And let them speak out what festivals they are.
Step 2: Leading-in (4minutes)
I will tell them something about my Spring Festival by showing a small passage. While reading it, ask students to guess the meaning of the underlined words and phrases which are very important in the reading text.
During the Spring Festival, I met my friend, Lily, who was kind and hard-working. I had fun with her. I even played a trick on her, but she was not angry. Besides, she gained high scores in the final exam and was awarded the first prize. I admired her very much and looked forward to seeing her again.

Step 3: Fast-reading (7minutes)
Let the students read each part and find information. In this part, the aims are to master the structure of the passage and improve the student’s ability to find useful information in a short time.
Read Para 1 and sub-heading (副标题):
Festivals of all kinds have many origins, some religious, some seasonal and some for special people or events. The passage lists four kinds of modern festivals. Namely: Festivals for the Dead, Festivals to Honor People, Harvest Festivals and Spring Festivals.
Read Para2, we can know Obon is celebrated in Japan, Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico and some western countries have Halloween.
Read Para3, we can know the Dragon Boat Festival in China is to honor Qu Yuan. Columbus Day in the USA is to honor Christopher Columbus. India has a national festival to honor Mohandas Gandhi.
Read Para4, we can know Harvest and Thanksgiving festivals are celebrated in European and other countries. China and Japan celebrate mid-autumn festivals.
Read Para5, we can know the Spring Festivals are celebrated in China, some western countries celebrate Easter and related festivals and Cherry Blossom Festivals are celebrated in Japan
Step 4: Careful-reading(20minutes)
