Analysis of students: students in my class who are now in Senior Two,are enthusiastic and interested in English learning. Despite the fact that they have been exposed to some cultural topics, such as music, western painting, drama in their previous two years’ experiences of English learning, Greek Mythology, is still “all greek” to them. Most of them may not be familiar with Greek legends or Theseus. So it may be challenging for them to fully comprehend the text.

Teaching aims and demands:

1. Knowledge aims: by learning the text students can master the basic usage of the important words: enlarge combat transparent transparently tug grab.

2. Ability aims: to improve their reading ability by understanding the story and analyzing the personality of the main character. More importantly, I hope to improve their ability of language output, such as listening, speaking and play acting.

3. Emotion aims: to appreciate the spirit and good values of ancient legends and spread the excellent Chinese culture.

Teaching and learning approaches: audio-visual approach, communicative approach, task-based approach, plus group work and presentation.

Ss watch a video about “Story of HouYi—A hero in Chinese legends” and think of a question: What are legends?T encourages Ss to talk about their understanding of legends.

Ss watch another video about an introduction of Greek Mythology. T asks Ss to list some names of the gods and goddesses mentioned in the video.

Lead-in to the topic of the unit.

Get Ss to learn what legends are and something about Greek Mythology.
