The teacher will lead students to write a short passage on the festivals step by step, that is from words, phrases to the sentences, and then to the whole passage, including three questions what, how and when.

Step 1. Everyone writes down the name of your favorite festival and chooses one favorite festival in your group.

The students can write freely as they like: the Spring Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, Thanksgiving Day, the Mid-Autumn Festival and so on.

Step 2. Each group uses less than three words to describe your favorite festival.

Have the students get into groups of six to find out what each has listed. And choose one as the topic of their group. Then try to describe their topic by using less than three words. They may include the following: traditional, important, essential, valuable, classical, familiar and so on.

Step 3. Each group introduces your festival by using three questions---what, when and how, and discuss them in the group.

The students can use the following questions:

What is your groups’ favorite festival?

When it is celebrated, that is, what date is it?

How is it celebrated on that day? That is, what do people usually do on the festival?

Step 4. Use the sentences to describe the time, the celebrations, and the activities of the festival.

In this period, one reporter in each group will write down the three sentences mentioned in step 3 as well as put them in the right order.

Step 5. Write a short passage using above words and sentences by working with your partners.

The reporter in each group will set down a 50 words short passage by employing words, phrases and sentences in step 2, 3 and 4.

Step 6. Make a presentation.
