Share a song of Nick Cave with students and introduce his letter of request by showing a video clip from Letters Live.
to arouse students’ learning interest and enable them to have a general and vivid idea of the letter (they are required to preview this letter before class)
Reading and exploring
Guide the students to understand the letter and explore the appropriateness of the letter by answering the following questions:
(1) Who did he write to?
(2) Why did he write this letter?
(3) What was his request?
(4) How did he make the request?
(5) How did he express thanks?
Write down some useful tips and expressions on the blackboard.
To help students understand the main idea of the letter.
To introduce how to write appropriately, hence introducing the PLEASE rule.
The PLEASE rule stands for politeness, level of formality, expressing personal feelings, adverbs, subjunctive mood and a proper ending.
