Learning about writing an email in English and describing places.
Teaching aims:
After learning this lesson, students will be able to:
(1) read an English email and learn about the format;
(2) learn about hutongs such as the history, location, characteristics, etc;
(3) use some descriptive words, add details and make use of senses while describing places;
Teaching Procedure:
Step 1. Warming-up
Students answer some questions about emails in English.
Q: Have you ever written an email in English?
If yes, ask students to say something about the format and characteristics of an English email.
If no, tell the students not to worry because we’re going to learn how to write an email in English. At the same time, we will learn how to describe places.
Step 2. Reading
The format and style of an English email.
1. Students read through the passage quickly and work out the format of an English email.

Salutation
Body
Closing
Attachment
Tip 1: Follow the format of an email: email addresses of the sender & receiver, subject, body, etc.
Students read the first and last paragraphs of the body and work out the style of this email.
Q: Do you think this mail is formal or informal? How do you know?
