Teaching Procedures:
Step 1: Warm-up Game
On the screen, place the useful but unfamiliar words and expressions that students are going to meet in later study of this lesson. The words and expressions will disappear one by one, and students who has sharp eyes and can recognize the missing one quickly, shall stand up at once and tell what the missing one is in a loud voice. Their efforts will contribute to their groups’ points in class.
Step 2: Activity One of a Jigsaw Game to Lead in an Example Composition
It is a group competition game. Four different rectangles, working as four jigsaw pieces, are going to be given to four different groups to work on. In each rectangle are various scattered words and expressions, with which students are required to make one fluent complicated sentence.
Step 3: Analyze the advanced sentences appearing in the jigsaw pieces of Step 2
Check the answers of the jigsaw game and meanwhile work out the advanced sentence from each rectangle piece.
Extract the useful structure in the advanced sentences worked out by students during the jigsaw game. These structures are: V-ing form serving as the adverbial, past participle serving as the adverbial, the with-structure, adverbial clauses, appropriate compound sentences, inversion sentences, attributive clause, noun clauses.
After the analysis, read the example composition combined into by the advanced sentences.
Step 4: Show time for evaluating students’ works
Work in groups. Ask students to choose a homework assignment done by them last time, and discuss to evaluate it according to the Gaokao evaluation standards. Students should give points(0-25), reasons, comments, corrections and improvements on their selected work.
The teacher chooses a group to do their presentation on the platform faced with all the students.
After the group’s presentation, the teacher should comment on their performance.
Step 5: Summary
Summarize what skilled we learned today that can be applied to descriptive writing of a place.
Step 6: Homework
Ask each student to evaluate their own composition written previously. Assign another composition of writing a place. Write down the two example compositions in this lesson.
