1.Definition of a summary.
T: Today, we’re going to learn Summary Writing. Do you have any idea what a summary is?
S:…(Ss’ answers vary.)
T: Now, let’s see the definition. It is a brief, thorough and objective restatement of the main idea and key point of a longer composition. That’s to say, we are supposed to write key points down without changing the style or structure.
(设计意图: 大多数学生只是在平时练习概要写作,没有深层次地思考过其含义。通过定义的学习, 学生对概要写作有更深的理解,为接下来概要写作要求的展开做好铺垫。)
2. Basic requirements of a summary.
理解准确,涵盖全部要点。
It includes all the main points& supporting points. In other words, we should pay attention to “completeness”.
能准确使用相应语法结构和词汇。
It should be written in a grammatically correct way. That’s “correctness”.
有效地使用了语句间的连接成分,使上下文连贯。
Some transitional words are added to make the passage coherent.
完全使用自己的语言。
The passage is rewritten in your own words. It’s a vital rule -----“No copy”.
(设计意图:学生了解概要写作的基本要求----completeness,correctness,coherence,no copy.)
3.Steps to write a summary.
Read for style, topic & structure.
Highlight key information by using the style, topic and structure.
List a brief outline by using structure and key information.
Rewrite the sentences by using some skills.
Add transitional expressions to make the summary coherent.
