About the students:
The students intend to major in arts and humanities in college and thus they are well prepared in knowledge related to economics and interested in knowing more about this area. They are top students and are eager to be challenged. However, despite the fact that they are able to talk about sophisticated economic problems in Chinese, when it comes to using English, they have no idea how to use some of the most common terms.
Teaching procedure:
Step 1: [microlecture] Vocabulary
In this part, students will first learn some new words and review old ones related to how people get their income. Here is a list of the words:
wage
salary
profit
fee
commission
dividend
rent
interest
pension
inheritance
royalty
The students will be given a handout with the list of words and their meaning and sample sentences. They can also choose to watch a micro-lecture to have a better understanding of these words. They will learn the words by themselves before the lesson starts. While in class, the teacher will assign some simple tasks to ensure that the students fully understand the meaning of each word.
Step 2. [Lead-in] Activity
What kind of income will they get?
The teacher will show some pictures of different people, and students will decide the type of income these people get.
