Type of teaching: Reading class
Part 1: Teaching background
1. About the material
“ The Necklace” is a short story written by Maupassant. “ The Necklace” tells the story of Madame Mathilde Loisel and her husband. Mathilde was an ordinary woman who always imagined herself in a high social position with an extravagant life. In order to look her finest at the ball, she borrowed a diamond necklace from her friend. However, she lost it. So she and her husband had to buy a same one by borrowing lots of money. The long path of her struggle began. After she finally paid off all the money, she met her friend in a park, where her friend told her that the original necklace which she lost was an imitation.
This story is very helpful for the students to improve their reading skills. We can understand the passage by analyzing the portraits, and further explore the themes of the story.
2. About the material
Our students have an interest in learning English and they can be very active in the class. What’s more, they have a certain amount of vocabularies and some reading skills,which can help them understand the story. However, they still lack confidence to express themselves.
Part 2: Analysis of teaching and learning
1. Teaching aims
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to
1) Knowledge aims
A. Know something about Maupassant;
B. Have an accurate understanding of the text by reading for plots, emotion and characters;
2) Ability aims
A. Seize the key information(who, when, where, what) when reading a novel;
B. Learn to analyze the characters and learn something from it;
C. Learn to compare the changes of Matilde’s emotions and personalities;
D. Write the possible ending for the story and train their creativity ability, thinking ability and imagination.
3) Emotion aim
To lead students form a right attitude to our life.
2. Teaching focus and difficulties.
1) Guide the students to do the detailed analysis;
2) Encourage the students to explore the theme of the story;
3) Develop students’ ability of writing the possible ending for this story.
3. Teaching method: task-based teaching method; communicative language teaching; whole language approach; cooperative learning method and discussion.
