Students are able to analyze the characters in the text, such as the changing mood of Matilda.
Students can be able to know the basic skills of shaping a character in a novel, such as using vivid description, making sharp contrast etc.
Teaching Procedures:
Step 1. Warming Up
Ask students to use the adjectives to describe a necklace.
Conclude the description with the target words, such as magnificent, marvelous, luxury, diamond.
Step2. Reading
Task1: Look through the text, find out the main characters mentioned and divide the story into 3 parts according to the key phrases: background information, before the party, during and after the party.
Task2: Read carefully about the first part(background information), and answer the question:How did Matilda and his husband feel about their life?
Suggested answer: Matilda felt dissatisfied/discontent about her life(Clue:She dreamed of having fine gowns and jewels. She longed for a beautiful house with servants. She imagined herself talking to rich and famous people. She disliked the apartment she lived in. She hated its dirty walls and worn-out chairs and ugly curtains.) while her husband felt content with the present life. (Clue: At dinner he would lift the lid of a pot and say, “Ah, you’ve made some stew. There’s nothing I like more than a good stew.”)
Task3: Read carefully about part2 and 3, and finish the following blanks.
Group work:

Plots:receive the invitation--discuss what to wear--borrow the necklace--enjoy the party--realize the necklace was gone
Designing aim: Students are encouraged to cooperate with the group members and able to present a perfect answer.
Task4: Read attentively about part2 and 3 again, and try to analyze how Matilda’s mood changed during the course. Meanwhile, try to find out and appreciate the vivid expressions in the text.
Task5: Predict what will happened next. Students are asked to answer the question: If you were the writer, how will you end the story?
Step3: After Reading
1.Conclude the 3 basic elements of a novel: character, plot, environment description.
2. Summarize the skills of shaping vivid characters in this text: using vivid description, using contrast, using the skills of dynamic or static characterization
Step4. Homework
Write the ending of the story and polish it using the skills you learned in the class.
