Enable the students to learn about Keesh and its unique culture.
Teaching Procedure:
Step 1 Lead-in
Play a short video of Eskimos’ hunting and ask questions:
Q1. What was weather like?
Q2. What are they doing?
Q3. Who are they? They are Eskimos living in the freezing north.
Q4: Do you think the boy can do the hunting alone?
Q5: What if a polar bear?
Step 2 Introduction
Introduce the author and the background information of Keesh
About the author:
Jack London (1876—1916)
a best short story writer from America, whose works deal with the great power of nature and the struggle for survival.
About the story:
a thirteen-year-old boy named Keesh from a faraway freezing place who fought for survival and fairness among his people.
Ask the students to describe the pictures from the story following the questions:
How is Keesh dressed?
What is he carrying?
What do you think he is doing?
How may the story end?
Step 3 Analysis
Ask one student to retell the beginning of the story to prepare the students for the analysis-reading of the story Keesh.
