Difficult points:

Students may find it difficult to:

find the evidence from the story for character analysis;

finish the chart of plot structure correctly and effectively, especially the Climax;

figure out the theme and significance of the story.

Important points:

In this lesson,

students will practice the basic literary elements of stories;

students will focus on the analysis of characters and the plot of the story;

students try to voice their understanding of the theme and significance of the story.

Teaching Procedures:

【本节课是文学作品欣赏课,小说全文很长,已经要求学生在课前看过,故而本课围绕小说欣赏中要关注的文学元素的复习而展开。】

Step I: Setting

1. Ask students about the story’s natural setting, that is, the time and place a story happens.

【设计说明】主要是回顾以前所学。本单元是《小说欣赏入门》的最后一个单元,很多的文学元素已在先前的学习中接触到过,这一步骤旨在让学生巩固先前所学。

2. Define what cultural setting of a story is and ask students to figure out the cultural setting of Keesh.

【设计说明】旨在介绍小说的文化背景,让学生明白文化背景对小说也有着重要的意义。并要求学生从故事的描述中去猜测这个故事可能的文化背景——一种以狩猎为生的部落生活,从而帮助学生们更好地理解故事的情节和人物的个性。

Step II: Characters

1. Ask students about the characters in the story and figure out their roles in the story.

【设计说明】旨在让学生熟悉故事中的人物角色和他们的身份,有助于学生梳理故事的情节。

2. Define “Dynamic characters” and “Static characters”.

【设计说明】旨在让学生对人物角色的性格进行分析,分析他们是动态人物还是静态人物,学生更深刻地去了解故事中角色的个性特点。

3. Ask students to analyze the traits of each character, using evidence from the text to support their analysis. The teacher gives some reference.
