美国著名语言学家Wilga M. Rivers 的一项统计表明在日常交际活动中45%的信息通过听获取，30%的信息通过说的形式传递，而读和写仅各占16%和9%。因此，听说在人际活动中作用显著。
现代外语教学思想认为口语是第一性的，文字是第二性的。改革开放以来，外语用于交际着实普遍重要，因此，教师在讲授英语知识的同事，应该强化学生英语听说能力的培养。
