Teaching methods
Considering students’ characteristics, I’ll adopt the communicative approach and task-based language teaching approach to provide them more chances communicate with others and to involve them in the cooking process and language learning process.
Teaching process
Referring to the above analysis, the teaching procedures include the following steps.
Lead-in
To lead in, I will give students a task--help Coco to cook for her parents. Four chefs are going to teach Coco four dishes. Students are supposed to find the ingredients for each dish. The purpose of giving the task is to arouse students’ interests and review the food words learned last class.
Presentation
After knowing the ingredients, students are going to help buy the ingredients in a supermarket. New dishes are also welcomed. Students are encouraged to make a conversation by using the sentence patterns given by the teacher. “What do you need?” “How many...do you need?” “How much... do you need?” The differentiation of countable and uncountable nouns will be emphasized. While the students are making the conversation, other students are supposed to guess the dish they are making.
Practice
Listen for the first time and write down the ingredients talked about in the conversation. Students are supposed to put all the ingredients in the right group--how many and how much. Listen to it for the second time and match the ingredients with the right amount.
Listen for the first time and notice the ingredients needed for making the Russian soup. Listen to it for the second time and note down the amount for each ingredient. Listen to it for the third time and complete the cooking process for the dish.
Production
Put the sentences in the recipe in the right order. Fill in the blanks in the sentences and give the name of the dish. After that, each group will have a cooking show with a host and a chef.
Summary
To summarize the lesson, I’ll ask the students what we have learned. Try to summarize the lesson from 3 aspects: ingredients, amount and process.
Homework
An American girl Tina wants to know more about Chinese dishes. Make a phone conversation with her and tell her how to cook a Chinese dish.
