There are many legends about the festival but the most popular is the legend of Qu Yuan, who is a great patriotic poet. He drowned himself in the river rather than see his country occupied and conquered by the State of Qin. Some people took boats down the river to find his body , while others threw food such as eggs and food like Zongzi into the river to attract fish from destroying Qu Yuan's body. To remember this great person, people decided to commemorate him on that day by holding Dragon Boat racing and eating Zongzi .
