1. Lead-in
Present a picture of a messy home: What can we do about it?
2. Presentation (phrases)
a. Show different pictures to teach different kinds of chores one by one.
b. Play a guessing game to help students master the phrases better.
3. Discussion
Let students have a discussion: Do you do these chores at home?
4. Pre-listening
Look at the theme picture and answer the following questions:
“What can you see in it?”
“Where are they?”
5. While-listening
a. Listen to the tape for the first time and finish 1b on P17.
b. Listen to it a second time and repeat sentence by sentence.
6. Post-listening
a. Observe the two questions asked by Peter’s mother. What can you find?
b. Compare three sentences used for asking people to take out the rubbish.
c. Draw a conclusion to the usage of “Could you please…” for polite requests.
7. Practice
a. Look at the pictures and make up sentences using “Could you please…”
b. Look at the pictures and make up conversations using “Could you please…” and two types of answers.
8. Pairwork
a. Read the demo conversation on P17 1c.
b. Ask students to make up conversations in pairs.
