教学过程:
Step1: Lead in
Ask the students if they still remember what happened on the day February 12th 2018. Then let the students watch a video.
Step 2: Present the target language (the past progressive tense)
While watching the video, ask the students:
What was the man doing when the earthquake happened?
What were they doing when the earthquake happened?
After watching the video, tell the students what the teacher was doing then. Add one more question:
What were you doing when the earthquake happened?
Get the students to focus on the target language by answering these questions. Write all the answers to the questions on the blackboard as the students answer. Get the students to pay attention to the structure of the sentences in the past progressive tense.
Sum up the form, meaning and use of the past progressive tense by filling the chart.

Step 3: Drill practice (the past progressive tense)
Ask the students the question: “what were you and your partner doing when the earthquake happened?” Get them to ask and answer the question in pairs. Then fill in the following chart.

Get the students to compare the following two kinds of sentences to see which is better?
When the earthquake happened, I was having my hair cut while Jack was having dinner.
