Multi-media facility, blackboard and bulletin board.
= 5 ﹨* ROMAN ﹨* MERGEFORMAT V . Teaching procedure
Warming-up
Start the class with a guessing game, a competition between two groups.
Let students listen to sounds of a dog, a cat, a cock, a tiger, a wolf, a dolphin, and a monkey. Ask students to guess what it can be. They are guided to answer using must be, could be, and might be.
2. Pre-reading
Introduce the reading task to the students: they are going to read about something strange happening in the neighborhood. They are supposed to be detectives just like Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, trying to read the whole story carefully and collect each clue patiently so as to work out a reasonable ending for the unfinished story with their creativity.
3.While-reading
Step 1: Skimming and scanning
Get students to read and decide which might be the best title.
A Small and Quiet Town
Strange Happenings in My Town
Animals in Our Neighborhood
(Help students to choose the best title sucessfully by catching the key words of the titles and skim the whole text quickly)
Then ask students to scan certain parts of the text carefully and find out what are the strange happenings.
Step 2: Word study
Get students to familiar with the key words of the article by matching their meanings in English for a better understanding of the story.
Step 3: Pairwork
Ask students to read the article carefully, discuss with their deskmates and write down what people think about the strange noises. (3c).
Post-reading: Discussing, writing & sharing
Group task:
Step1. Ask students to infer the truth to the strange happenings in groups of four according to the clues they’ve got and write it down. Demand that they should try to use the modal verbs for making inferences. Privide a form for students to help them understand the language structure better. Then give them a sample to guide them to write.
Step2. Get some groups to share their endings in class.
Step3. Ask all groups to stick their endings on a bulletin board so that the whole class can share and learn from each other.
5. Homework
Assign students to reread the story after class, and try to retell it with their own endings. Remind them to be careful, patient and creative.
