【Design Purpose】Knowledge aims, ability aims and emotion aims are equally important. With Knowledge aims, students can understand the invention of basketball. With ability aims, students know how to read articles of the same genre. With emotion aims, students understand the importance of innovation and good manners during communication.

Main idea of the text
【Design Purpose】The foundation of article comprehension is understanding new words, new phrases and new grammar structures. Therefore I will focus on them. After clearing the obstacles, students will understand the invention of basketball. In order to achieve this goal, we can use mind maps as a useful tool.
2. Teaching Difficult Points
How to draw and use mind map.
【Design Purpose】Mind map is a very useful tool. Yet it can be too abstract and difficult for middle school students. That’s why I would like to draw mind maps with students and ask them to memorize the invention of basketball with the help of mind maps. In this way, students can see with their own eyes how effective mind map is.
3. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Pre-reading
It takes about four minutes.
Activity1. Check preview
Teacher presents new words. Students say the meanings out loud together.
Teacher: Let’s check the preview together. Are you ready?
【Design Purpose】Preview enables students to read the text before class so as to get a vague idea of the article and difficulties in advance. By checking preview, teachers know how much students have mastered.
Activity 2 Present a wonderful video
Teacher presents a wonderful video about NBA. When the video finishes, teacher asks some questions about basketball.
Teacher: Do you know when basketball was invented? Who invented it?
【Design Purpose】The video can arouse students’ interests in basketball. The questions can boost students’ curiosity. They will be more eager to read the text.
Step 2 Listening and Fast Reading
This step will take about 5 minutes.
Activity 3 I will let the students listen to the tape and then let them match the main idea to each paragraph.
Step 3 While-reading
This step will take about 15 minutes
Activity 4 Scan for specific information
The class is divided into five groups to find out answers to teachers’ questions. The students who get the right answers will get a present.
