Teaching Procedures

Step1 Warming up

Watch a video together, ask Ss the topic of the video.

Step2 Pre-reading

Give several pictures about our women’s volleyball team, ask a question: What makes this team win?

Ss talk freely.

Step3 While-reading

Fast reading:

Tell Ss: Our friend Peter now has a problem, what happened?

Give Ss 2 minutes to read this passage quickly, and number the events in the correct order.

Careful reading:

Ss read the passage again and then finish exercises.

First, find more details to complete the mind-map and answer these questions at the same time: 1)What did Peter feel? Did his feeling change? 2)Who helps him change? 3)What advice did Peter’s father give him? 4)What happened after Peter told his teammates that he was sorry? About the last two questions, Ss could role-play the conversations with T’s help.

When Ss are answering questions, T should integrate the reading strategy—“Recognizing idioms and phrases” into the process.

Second, T shows questions: After all this, What did Peter think of his team? Then what are important to a winning team? Make Ss read the last paragraph together and give their opinions.

Step4 Post-reading

Role-play. Several Ss work together to role-play a conversation between Peter and his father or his teammates. They can write the conversation freely as long as it is reasonable.

2. Group work.

T asks: “Peter is so lucky to be on a winning team, what can we do to make our team better?”

Four Ss as a group, talk about that topic together, and one student should present their result. T should give some help when necessary.

Step5 Summary

Ss themselves summarize what they’ve learned, T emphasizes the factors of a winning team and leads Ss to develop team spirit——fight for our team.
